Finding Games on Restricted Military Networks: Practical Strategies

Military network filters vary by base, branch, and command policy, and they change frequently. No static list of "unblocked" games stays accurate for long. Instead of chasing a moving target, use these strategies to discover what works at your location.

Why a Fixed List Doesn't Exist

  • Heterogeneous filtering: Each installation configures its own web proxy and application whitelists.
  • Dynamic updates: Category databases (gaming, streaming, social) are updated daily by vendors like Forcepoint, Blue Coat, or Zscaler.
  • Content drift: Game sites add new scripts, domains, or social features that trigger re-categorization.

Effective Discovery Methods

  1. Lean toward lightweight, browser-based titles. Text-based games (e.g., A Dark Room, Universal Paperclips), classic HTML5/JS puzzles (2048, Sudoku, chess), and retro ports often slip through because they lack heavy WebGL, WebSocket, or CDN signatures that filters flag.
  2. Consult your local MWR/IT help desk. They know the current allow-list and may maintain a morale-site list (e.g., armygames.dod.mil legacy portals, though many are deprecated).
  3. Check community knowledge bases. Subreddits like r/Military, r/AirForce, or base-specific Discord servers often have sticky threads titled "Games that work at [Base] as of [Month/Year]."
  4. Use approved offline installers. Many single-player games (GOG, itch.io DRM-free builds) can be downloaded on a personal device, transferred via approved media, and run without phoning home.
  5. VPN? Proceed with caution. Most AUP/ROE prohibit unauthorized VPNs on NIPR/SIPR. If command authorizes a specific VPN for telework, it may tunnel game traffic — but verify in writing first.

Categories with Higher Success Rates

  • Turn-based strategy (Civilization VI demo, Into the Breach)
  • Puzzle/logic (Zachtronics titles, The Witness)
  • Roguelikes with local saves (Hades, Slay the Spire)
  • Retro/emulated classics (via RetroArch cores)
  • Narrative adventures (Firewatch, Oxenfree)

Bottom line: Respect the AUP. Unauthorized circumvention risks loss of network privileges, NJP, or clearance issues. When in doubt, ask your ISSO/ISSM.
