The four iconic ghosts in Pac-Man aren't just generic enemies—each possesses a distinct artificial intelligence routine that defines how they hunt the player. Understanding these behaviors is key to mastering the maze.
Blinky is the most aggressive pursuer. He directly targets Pac-Man's current tile, making him the most consistent threat. As the number of remaining dots decreases, Blinky's speed increases, turning him into a relentless hunter in the late game.
Despite her nickname, Pinky doesn't simply chase faster. Instead, she targets a position four tiles ahead of Pac-Man's current facing direction. This ambush tactic tries to cut off escape routes, especially in tight corridors.
Inky's behavior is the most complex and unpredictable. His target tile is calculated using a vector based on both Blinky's current position and Pac-Man's facing direction. This dual dependency creates erratic, hard-to-predict movement patterns.
Clyde exhibits a split personality. When far from Pac-Man (more than eight tiles), he chases directly like Blinky. However, once he gets close, he abandons pursuit and retreats to his designated scatter corner in the bottom-left of the maze.
Later entries in the series introduced extra ghosts—Pac-Mania added "Sue" and "Funky"—but the original quartet remains the universal standard across virtually every version of the game.
