Can You Trade a Non-Working DS Game at GameStop? No—Policy Explained

GameStop does not accept non-working DS games for trade-in. Their policy explicitly requires "good working condition"—the game must boot, play without freezing, and have no major defects.

What Counts as "Non-Working"

  • Game doesn't boot or shows "Game Card could not be read" errors.
  • Frequent crashes, freezes, or save corruption during normal play.
  • Deep scratches or physical damage to the cartridge contacts.
  • Missing or severely damaged label (can affect authentication).

Even lightly scratched games may be rejected if the employee's test system can't read them reliably.

Your Options for Damaged Games

  • Sell online as-is. eBay, Mercari, or Facebook Marketplace—disclose the condition honestly. Collectors or refurbishers may buy for parts or repair.
  • Donate. Some charities accept used games (even damaged) for recycling programs.

GameStop's business model relies on reselling functional games. They won't take inventory they can't confidently put on the shelf.
