Linking Game Boy Original to Game Boy Advance: Impossible

Direct link cable connection is impossible.

Hardware Incompatibility

  • Connector: GB/GBC = 3.5mm jack; GBA = proprietary 16-pin.
  • Protocol: Different voltage, clock speed, packet structure.
  • No Adapter Exists: Electrical and protocol mismatch prevents passive adapters.

Workarounds

  1. GBA SP (AGS-001): Has GB/GBC cartridge slot—plays GB games on GBA screen (no link multiplayer).
  2. Emulation: VBA-M, mGBA, or RetroArch on PC/phone with virtual link cable.
  3. GameCube Game Boy Player: Plays GB/GBA on TV; supports link cables between GBAs only.

Multiplayer Reality

  • GB↔GB: Works (3.5mm cable).
  • GBA↔GBA: Works (GBA link cable).
  • GB↔GBA: No hardware solution exists.

For cross-generation multiplayer, emulation with virtual link is the only functional method.
