Play GTA San Andreas Online? Official Multiplayer Doesn't Exist—Use SA-MP or MTA Mods

The original Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) has no official online multiplayer. Rockstar never added it. But the PC version's modding community built two massive, still-active multiplayer platforms: SA-MP and MTA:SA.

SA-MP (San Andreas Multiplayer)

  • Style: Lightweight, scripted gamemodes (Roleplay, Deathmatch, Freeroam, Stunt, Racing, TDM, Zombie).
  • Architecture: Pawn scripting — server owners write custom modes.
  • Playerbase: 20,000–50,000 concurrent (2024). Heavy RP servers (LS-RP, GTA World moved to RAGE:MP but SA-MP RP persists).
  • Install: Own SA on Steam/Rockstar Launcher → Download SA-MP 0.3.7-R1 client → Install to SA folder → Launch SA-MP → Browse servers.
  • Version Lock: Requires SA v1.0 US (HOODLUM). Steam version is v2.0/3.0 — must downgrade (legal if you own it).

MTA:SA (Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas)

  • Style: Lua scripting, more powerful engine, better sync, custom models, shaders, UI.
  • Gamemodes: Race (huge community), Deathmatch, Freeroam, RP (less than SA-MP), Custom.
  • Playerbase: 10,000–30,000 concurrent.
  • Install: Own SA → Download MTA client → Auto-detects SA install → Launch.
  • Version Support: Works with Steam v1.0/v2.0/v3.0 (auto-downgrades internally).

Critical Notes

  • Own the game legally. Both mods verify ownership.
  • No cross-play: SA-MP players can't join MTA servers.
  • Console/PS2/Xbox: No mods. No online. Period.
  • GTA Online: Separate game (GTA V). Not compatible.

Getting Started

  1. Buy GTA: San Andreas on Steam ($9.99, often $2.49 sale).
  2. Install MTA:SA (easier, better tech) → Join "Race" or "Freeroam" servers.
  3. If you want heavy RP → Research SA-MP RP servers (apply on forum, learn rules).
  4. Join Discords. Read rules. Don't deathmatch in RP.

San Andreas online is alive, free, and community-run. Not Rockstar—but better in many ways.
