Playing Modern Warfare 3 Online with Only 3 Players – Workarounds

Matchmaking requires full lobbies. Public playlists (Team Deathmatch, Domination, etc.) fill to 12/18 players. You cannot queue as a party of 3 and stay a party of 3.

Options for 3 Friends

1. Private Match: Create → set Player Count 3 (or 6 with 3 bots). You'll play vs. bots or just explore. No XP/progression in most modes.
2. Find 3 More: Use LFG (Looking for Group) on Xbox/PlayStation app, Discord, or r/CoDCompetitive to fill a 6-stack.
3. Local Split-Screen: 2 on one console + 1 on another → join same party → search. Still fills lobby with randoms.
4. Plutonium (PC Mod): Community client for MW3 with custom servers, smaller modes, LAN support. PC only, separate from Steam.

Note: Official Xbox 360/PS3 servers are deprecated; peer-to-peer host migration causes lag. Plutonium (PC) is the most active community in 2024.
