Why People Bought the PS3 Slim Despite No PS2 Backward Compatibility

The PS3 Slim (2009) dropped PS2 hardware emulation, yet sold millions because:

  • Price: Launched at $299 vs. $399–$599 for fat PS3—massive accessibility boost.
  • Reliability: 45nm Cell + RSX ran cooler, drastically reducing Yellow Light of Death.
  • Size/Weight: 33% smaller, 36% lighter—fit modern entertainment centers.
  • Blu-ray: Still the cheapest good Blu-ray player for years.
  • PSN & Library: Access to PS3 exclusives (Uncharted, MGS4, Last of Us), PSN games, and media apps.
  • PS2 alternatives: Many kept a $20 PS2 slim alongside, or bought PS2 Classics on PSN.

For most buyers, the trade-off was worth it: a cheaper, quieter, more reliable console with a huge game library—even without PS2 discs.
