Absolutely not. PS3 games cannot run on PlayStation 2. The hardware gap is generational.
| Component | PlayStation 2 (2000) | PlayStation 3 (2006) |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Emotion Engine (MIPS III, 299 MHz) + 2x VPU (Vector Units) | Cell Broadband Engine (1 PPE @ 3.2 GHz + 7 SPEs @ 3.2 GHz) |
| GPU | Graphics Synthesizer (GS) - 150 MHz, 2.4 GB/s VRAM bandwidth | RSX "Reality Synthesizer" (NVIDIA G70) - 550 MHz, 22.4 GB/s GDDR3 |
| RAM | 32 MB RDRAM (Main) + 4 MB eDRAM (GS) | 256 MB XDR (Main) + 256 MB GDDR3 (VRAM) |
| Optical Drive | DVD-ROM (4.7/8.5 GB) | Blu-ray Disc (25/50 GB) + DVD/CD |
| OS / API | Custom Kernel, LibGS, LibVU (Bare Metal) | GameOS (Hypervisor), LibGCM, OpenGL ES/PSGL |
Bottom Line: If you want to play PS3 games, you need a PS3, PS4/PS5 (via PS Plus Premium streaming), or PC (RPCS3 emulator). A PS2 will never run them.
