PlayStation 3 Hardware Deep Dive: Cell, RSX, XDR, Blu-ray

The PS3 (2006) was an architectural anomaly: a supercomputer-inspired design that defined a generation.

Cell Broadband Engine (CPU)

  • 1× PPE (Power Processing Element): 64-bit PowerPC, 3.2 GHz, 2-way SMT (2 threads). Runs OS, game logic, driver code.
  • 8× SPEs (Synergistic Processing Elements): 128-bit SIMD cores, 3.2 GHz, 256 KB Local Store each (no cache!). 7 usable (1 disabled for yield, 1 reserved for OS).
  • EIB (Element Interconnect Bus): 204 GB/s ring bus connecting PPE, SPEs, Memory Controller, I/O.
  • Programming Model: Data-parallel offload to SPEs (DMA-in, compute, DMA-out). Notoriously difficult; late-cycle engines (Unreal 3, PhyreEngine) abstracted it.

RSX "Reality Synthesizer" (GPU)

  • Based on NVIDIA G70 (GeForce 7800 GTX), 550 MHz.
  • 256 MB GDDR3 VRAM @ 700 MHz (22.4 GB/s).
  • Fixed-function pixel/vertex shaders (Shader Model 3.0). No unified shaders.
  • FlexIO bus to Cell (20 GB/s read, 15 GB/s write) — bottleneck for CPU→GPU data.

Memory

  • 256 MB XDR DRAM (System): 3.2 GHz, 25.6 GB/s (octal data rate). Connected to Cell only.
  • Split Pool: CPU can't directly read GPU VRAM; GPU can't directly read XDR. Data must copy via FlexIO. Major dev pain point.

Storage & Media

  • Blu-ray Disc Drive (2× CLV): 72 Mb/s (9 MB/s). 25GB (single) / 50GB (dual) layer. Slow seek → mandatory installs.
  • 2.5" SATA HDD: 20/40/60/80/120/160/250/320/500GB. User-replaceable (standard SATA).

I/O & Connectivity

  • Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g (no n), Bluetooth 2.0 (EDR).
  • 4× USB 2.0 (fat) / 2× USB 2.0 (Slim/Super Slim).
  • HDMI 1.3a (first console with HDMI), AV Multi-out (composite/component/SCART/RGB).
  • Optical (TOSLINK) out.
  • Memory Card Readers (SD/CF/MS/xD) — fat only.

Why It Mattered

Cell's parallelism foreshadowed GPGPU, compute shaders, heterogeneous computing (HSA). RSX was a dead-end (fixed pipe). Blu-ray won the format war. The split memory model taught the industry: unified memory is essential (PS4/Xbox One/Series/PC all use hUMA).
