How to Set Up Wireless Internet on PlayStation 3 (PS3)

PS3 Wi-Fi Connection Guide

All PS3 models (except the launch 20 GB model **CECHB01**) have built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. Here’s the setup:

  1. Settings → Network Settings → Internet Connection Settings.
  2. Select **“Yes”** to disconnect current connection.
  3. Choose **“Wireless”** as connection method.
  4. Select **“Scan”** → pick your **SSID** from the list.
  5. Choose **Security Type** (WPA2-PSK/AES recommended; WEP if ancient router).
  6. Enter **password** via on-screen keyboard (plug in a USB keyboard for speed).
  7. **Automatic** for IP Address, DHCP Host Name, DNS, MTU, Proxy, UPnP.
  8. Press **Right** on D-pad to save → **“Test Connection.”**

Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Signal strength < 60%: Move PS3 closer; avoid concrete walls, microwaves, cordless phones.
  • “Obtaining IP Address” timeout: Reboot router/modem. Check DHCP pool not exhausted.
  • DNS errors: Set **Primary DNS: 1.1.1.1**, **Secondary: 8.8.8.8** (Manual DNS in step 7).
  • WPA3 / Wi-Fi 6 routers: PS3 only supports up to WPA2-AES / 802.11g. Set router to **mixed WPA2/WPA3** or **WPA2-only** mode; disable 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) on 2.4 GHz band.
  • Firmware: Update PS3 via Settings → System Update (or USB offline update).
  • Launch 20 GB model (CECHB01): No Wi-Fi. Requires **USB Wi-Fi adapter** (802.11b/g, e.g., Linksys WUSB54GC) or wired Ethernet.

If issues persist, visit PlayStation Support with your error code (e.g., 80710102, 80028EA5).
