The Sims 3 on PowerBook G4: Incompatible — Here's Why

The Sims 3 cannot run on a PowerBook G4. The hardware and OS requirements are fundamentally mismatched.

Why It Fails

  • Architecture: TS3 is Intel-only (Universal Binary) — Rosetta on G4 is far too slow.
  • Graphics: No Shader Model 2.0 = cannot render core shaders.
  • OS: 10.6 requires Intel — G4 stuck on 10.5.

Playable Alternatives on G4

  • The Sims 2 (Mac): Native PowerPC — runs well on 1.5+ GHz G4, 1 GB RAM, 64 MB VRAM.
  • The Sims 1 + Expansions: Classic Mac OS / early OS X — fully compatible.
  • OpenSim / SimCity 4: Also run on G4.

Keep the G4 for retro — play Sims 2. For Sims 3, you need an Intel Mac (2006+) or Windows/Linux.
