How to Fix an Xbox 360 Failure to Register Disc

While using the XBox 360, you might run into playback issues with the video game and DVD movie discs used in the system. When an error occurs, you could receive a message that states a failure to register the disc has occurred. This is typically a fault with the disc and not the XBox 360. However, you can typically correct the issue with a few troubleshooting steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Compressed air
  • Damp rag
  • Disc repair kit

Instructions

    • 1

Open the XBox 360 disc drive and inspect the bottom of the disc. If the disc is dirty with fingerprints, dust or small scratches, the issue is with the disc and not the gaming system. However, if the disc is perfectly clean the problem could be with the XBox 360.

    • 2

Spray a few shots of compressed air into the disc drive. This removes and frees up any dust clinging to the lens of the drive. As dust begins to accumulate on the inside of the XBox 360, it sticks to the lens of the player, preventing the gaming system from correctly reading the disc.

Clean of the video game disc with a damp rag. Move from the inside circle to the outer rim of the disc. Circulating around the disc with the rag can actually push dirt into the small holes of the video game, causing further damage to the disc.

Insert the disc into a disc repair kit. This kit circulates around CDs, DVDs and video game discs and buffs out scratches. Rotate the small crank handle on the repair kit to literally sand down the DVD and remove the light scratch. Heavy scratches cannot be fixed.

Insert the video game back into the XBox 360 to see whether the fixes worked.
