Does PS3 Have Free Online Play? PS Plus History & 2021 Shutdown

No—most PS3 online multiplayer required PlayStation Plus.

Timeline

• 2006–2010: Free online for all games.
• June 2010 (PS Plus launch): New titles gradually required PS Plus for online (e.g., Killzone 3, Uncharted 3).
• 2013 onward: **Mandatory for virtually all online multiplayer** (except a few F2P titles like DC Universe Online, Planetside 2, Dust 514).
• October 2021: Sony **shut down PS3/PSVita/PSP store purchases, game downloads, and most online services** (matchmaking, leaderboards, cloud saves).

What Still Works (2024)

• Offline single-player / local co-op.
• Already-downloaded games & DLC.
• Media apps (Netflix, YouTube) — if they still update.
• Ad-hoc / LAN multiplayer (local wireless) for supported titles.

If you buy a PS3 today, expect a **purely offline** experience for 99% of the library.
