Does the PS3 Play Blu-ray Movies? Yes, It Was a Key Feature

Yes. Every PlayStation 3 model (Fat, Slim, Super Slim) includes a Blu-ray drive and native playback support for commercial Blu-ray movies. This was a major selling point at launch (2006), as standalone Blu-ray players cost $500–$1,000.

Key Details

  • Region Coding: PS3 enforces Blu-ray region codes (Region A: Americas/Japan; Region B: Europe/Africa; Region C: Asia/Russia). Discs must match your console's region.
  • Formats Supported: BD-ROM (commercial movies), BD-R/RE (recorded), DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, CD, SACD (early fat models only), AVCHD.
  • Updates: Internet connection required periodically to renew AACS encryption keys for newer discs. Without updates, new movies may fail to play.
  • Remote: Official Blu-ray remote (Bluetooth) recommended; DualShock 3 works but lacks dedicated menu buttons.
  • 3D Blu-ray: Supported via firmware 3.50+ on all models (requires 3D TV).

If playback fails: update system software, clean disc, try another Blu-ray. Drive laser failure is common on early "fat" models (KES-400A).
