PS3 Digital Out (Optical Audio) Explained: Setup and Benefits

What Is "Digital Out" on PS3?

The Digital Out (Optical) port is a TOSLINK (S/PDIF) optical audio output. It transmits digital audio via light pulses — immune to electromagnetic interference.

Capabilities & Supported Formats

FormatSupported?Notes
PCM 2.0 (Stereo)✅All games, DVDs, CDs
PCM 5.1 / 7.1✅Games with LPCM surround (many PS3 exclusives)
Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1✅DVDs, Blu-rays, some games, Netflix/app streaming
DTS 5.1✅Blu-rays, some games (MGS4, GT5 Prologue)
Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD MA❌Bandwidth limit — requires HDMI
Dolby Atmos / DTS:X❌Requires HDMI eARC

Connection Setup

  1. Cable: TOSLINK optical cable (square connector, often with protective caps).
  2. PS3 Port: "DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL)" on rear — remove cap.
  3. Receiver/Soundbar: "OPTICAL IN" or "DIGITAL IN".
  4. PS3 Settings: Settings → Sound Settings → Audio Output → Digital Out (Optical) → Select formats:
    • PCM 2.0/5.1/7.1: ON
    • Dolby Digital: ON
    • DTS: ON
    • AAC: ON (for apps)
  5. Receiver: Set to "Auto" or "Digital" input mode.

Why Use Optical Over HDMI Audio?

  • Older Receivers: Pre-HDMI AVRs (2000s–early 2010s) lack HDMI but have optical.
  • HDMI Handshake Issues: Optical avoids HDCP/EDID problems.
  • Separate Audio Path: Route game audio to receiver, video to TV/projector.
  • Latency: Optical has ~0ms latency vs HDMI processing delay.

Limitations vs HDMI

  • No Lossless HD Audio: Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD MA require HDMI 1.3+ bandwidth.
  • No CEC Control: Can't control receiver volume with PS3 remote.
  • Cable Fragility: TOSLINK cables break if bent sharply.
  • PS3 Slim/Super Slim: All models have optical; original "Fat" PS3 also has it.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound: Check cable caps removed, correct input on receiver, PS3 format settings.
  • Stereo Only: Receiver may not decode 5.1 PCM — enable Dolby/DTS bitstream on PS3.
  • Intermittent: Clean ports with compressed air; replace cable.
  • Apps Silent: Netflix/YouTube may need "Audio Format: Bitstream" in app settings.

Verdict: Optical is excellent for surround sound on legacy audio gear. For modern setups, HDMI ARC/eARC is superior (lossless audio, single cable, CEC control).
