Using a Keyboard with PlayStation 3: Limited Options

The PS3 does not natively support keyboard input for games. The OS only uses keyboards for:

  • Text entry (PSN login, web browser, messages).
  • System settings navigation.

Workarounds (With Caveats)

1. Games With Native Keyboard Support (Rare)

  • Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3) – full KB/M support.
  • Final Fantasy XIV (original 1.0 / A Realm Reborn) – KB/M for chat & UI.
  • DC Universe Online – KB/M supported.
  • Some PS2 classics via backward compat (if the PS2 game supported USB KB).

2. Third-Party Adapters (Keyboard → Controller Emulation)

  • XIM Apex / XIM Matrix (discontinued, used market only) – translates KB/M to controller signals. Expensive ($150+ used).
  • Cronus Zen / CronusMAX Plus – similar, scriptable, controversial (anti-recoil scripts). Risk of ban in online games.
  • Brook Keyboard/Mouse Adapter – cheaper (~$40), less features.

These are not official Sony products. They may violate game TOS. Use at own risk.

3. PS3 Emulation on PC (RPCS3)

  • Play PS3 games on Windows/Linux with native keyboard/mouse.
  • Requires decent CPU (Ryzen 5 3600 / i5-10400+), Vulkan GPU, 16 GB RAM.
  • Legal only if you dump your own games/BIOS.
  • Compatibility: ~65% playable, many AAA titles work well.

4. Linux on PS3 (OtherOS) — Historical Only

Removed in firmware 3.21 (2010). Not possible on current firmware.

Recommendation

  • For text entry: Any USB/Bluetooth keyboard works natively.
  • For gaming: Use a DualShock 3 / DualShock 4 (DS4 works wired/Bluetooth on PS3).
  • If you must use KB/M for a specific game → RPCS3 on PC is the only reliable, ban-free path.
