Can You Put a Blanket Under a PlayStation 3? Don't Do It—Overheating Risk

Don't Do It — Overheating Risk

Placing a blanket (or any fabric) under a PS3 blocks ventilation and traps heat. The PS3 (especially Fat models) runs hot; its bottom intake and side/rear exhaust need clear airflow.

Consequences

  • Overheating → YLOD (Yellow Light of Death): Solder cracks on RSX/Cell BGA.
  • Fan Noise: Fan spins at max RPM constantly.
  • Performance Throttling: Clock speeds drop to protect silicon.
  • Dust Accumulation: Blanket fibers clog heatsink fins.

Proper Placement

  • Hard, Flat Surface: Table, shelf, TV stand.
  • Elevated Stand: 1–2 inch risers (or bottle caps) under feet improve bottom intake.
  • Vertical Stand (Official): Saves space, improves convection.
  • Cooling Pad (Laptop Style): USB-powered fans under console — helpful for Fat models.
  • Regular Cleaning: Compressed air in vents every 3–6 months.

Treat your PS3 like a desktop PC: open air, clean, upright or flat on hard surface.
