Which Wii Consoles Play GameCube Games?

Only the original Wii (model RVL-001, released 2006) supports GameCube games.

Compatibility by Model

ModelModel NumberGameCube GamesGC Controller PortsGC Memory Card Slots
Original Wii (vertical stand)RVL-001✅ Yes42
Wii Family Edition (horizontal, 2011)RVL-101❌ No00
Wii Mini (red, 2012/2013)RVL-201❌ No00
Wii U (all models)WUP-001/101❌ No* (Wii Mode only)00

*Wii U plays Wii games in "Wii Mode," but GameCube compatibility was removed entirely—no ports, no software emulation.

How to Identify Your Wii

  • RVL-001: Stands vertically, has **flap on top** covering 4 GC controller ports + 2 memory card slots. GameCube logo on disc slot.
  • RVL-101/201: Lies flat, **no top flap**, no GC ports/slots. Wii Mini has no Wi-Fi, no SD slot, red case.

What You Need for GameCube on Original Wii

  • GameCube Controller (or WaveBird)
  • GameCube Memory Card (optional—Wii saves to internal memory automatically)
  • GameCube Disc (Wii reads mini-DVD format natively)

Note: No Wii model plays GameCube games in HD or with upscaling. For that, use a GameCube with Carby/GCVideo, or a modded Wii U running Nintendont.
