What Kind of Game Console Is the 3DO? The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer

The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer

The 3DO (officially the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer) is a fifth-generation home video game console released in 1993. It competed with the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation.

Key Characteristics

• Advanced Hardware: 32-bit ARM60 CPU, dual GPUs, and 2 MB RAM—impressive for its time.
• CD-ROM Media: Used CDs instead of cartridges, allowing full-motion video and large storage.
• Multimedia Focus: Marketed as a home entertainment system (audio CDs, Video CDs, photos).
• Licensed Manufacturing: 3DO Company licensed the spec to manufacturers like Panasonic, GoldStar, and Sanyo.

Market Outcome

Despite technical superiority, the 3DO struggled due to a high launch price ($699), limited exclusive software, and fierce competition. It was discontinued around 1996 after selling roughly 2 million units.
