Microsoft sells Xbox Live subscriptions and Microsoft points on plastic cards available at various retailers. These cards can be used to redeem Xbox Live subscription time for your Xbox Live account or to purchase items off of Xbox Live. You can redeem your subscription or points directly on the Xbox itself. After you've redeemed the item, you can use Xbox Live subscription or points just as you would if you had purchased them directly on the Xbox using your credit card.

Turn on the Xbox. Press the "Guide" button in the middle of the controller.

Scroll to the "Marketplace" tab. Select "Redeem Code."

Enter the code exactly as it is presented on the Xbox Live card and select "Done."
