How to Make a Video Game at Age 12: A Starter Guide

Awesome initiative! 12 is a perfect age to start. Here's a practical roadmap:

1. Pick a Beginner-Friendly Engine

  • Scratch (MIT) – Block coding, browser-based, instant sharing. scratch.mit.edu. Best for logic fundamentals.
  • Godot 4 – Free, open-source, GDScript (Python-like), 2D/3D. godotengine.org. Industry-relevant.
  • GameMaker Studio 2 – Drag-and-drop + GML, great 2D workflow. Free for non-commercial. gamemaker.io.
  • Unity – C#, massive tutorials, but steeper learning curve. Free Personal. unity.com.

2. Learn by Cloning Tiny Games

  1. Pong → Breakout → Flappy Bird → Doodle Jump → 2D Platformer.
  2. Follow one tutorial series fully (e.g., Brackeys, GDQuest, GameMaker). Don't tutorial-hop.

3. Build Your Own Idea (Scope Tiny)

  • One mechanic, one level, 3 assets max. Finish it. Polish UI/juice. Share on itch.io.

4. Learn Adjacent Skills

  • Art: Piskel (pixel), Krita (2D), Blender (3D – steep but free).
  • Audio: BFXR (sfx), Bosca Ceoil (chiptunes), Audacity (recording).
  • Design: Write a 1-page GDD (Core Loop, Win/Loss, Controls).

5. Community & Safety

Golden Rule: Finished > Perfect. Make many small games. Each teaches more than one big unfinished project.
