Who Is Considered the Father of Video Games?

There is **no single universally agreed "Father of Video Games."** The title is shared among pioneers who contributed distinct, foundational innovations:

The Three Pillars

FigureTitle ClaimKey AchievementYear
Ralph BaerFather of the **Home Video Game Console**Invented the **Brown Box** (1967) → Magnavox Odyssey (1972), first commercial home console with interchangeable games, light gun, analog controllers.1967/1972
Nolan BushnellFather of the **Arcade Video Game Industry**Co-founded **Atari**; released **Pong** (1972), first massively successful arcade cabinet; created cartridge-based home console market (Atari VCS/2600).1971/1972
Steve RussellCreator of the **First Digital Computer Game**Led MIT team to create **Spacewar!** (1962) on DEC PDP-1 — first interactive, real-time, multiplayer, gravity-simulation game on a programmable computer.1962

Critical Precursors

  • William Higinbotham (1958): **Tennis for Two** — analog computer + oscilloscope. First *publicly demonstrated* interactive visual game. Not digital, not programmable.
  • A.S. Douglas (1952): **OXO (Noughts and Crosses)** — EDSAC vacuum-tube computer + CRT. First *graphical* computer game (static display).
  • Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. & Estle Ray Mann (1947): **Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device** (US Patent 2,455,992) — analog CRT missile sim. No CPU, no memory, no software.

Why It Matters

  • Baer → **Console business model, patents, home play.**
  • Bushnell → **Arcade culture, venture capital, third-party dev.**
  • Russell → **Software as entertainment, open code, hacker culture.**
  • Higinbotham → **Public exhibition, "screen + controller" paradigm.**

Each built on the others' shoulders. The industry exists because *all* happened.
