Do You Need a TV Box to Play Video Games?

No. TV boxes (streaming devices) are not built for gaming.

Device Purposes

• TV Boxes (Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV): Streaming video—Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc.
• Gaming Consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch): Dedicated gaming hardware with proper controllers and libraries.
• Gaming PCs: Maximum performance, vast library, versatility.

Exceptions

• Some Android TV boxes run casual games (Crossy Road, etc.).
• Cloud gaming apps (GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming) on TV boxes—but require a controller and subscription.
• Nvidia Shield TV: Hybrid streamer/console with GeForce Now and native Android games.

For real gaming, buy a console or gaming PC. TV boxes are for media consumption.
