Short answer: Only while you're playing them, and only if your hardware is insufficient. Games don't permanently "slow down" your computer.
| Issue | Fix |
|---|---|
| Low FPS / Stutter | Lower resolution, texture quality, shadow quality, disable ray tracing. Use DLSS/FSR/XeSS upscaling. |
| Background Apps | Close browser, disable Discord hardware acceleration, use Game Bar (Win+G) → Resources to kill tasks. |
| Overheating | Clean dust, replace thermal paste (laptops: cooling pad), undervolt CPU/GPU (MSI Afterburner / ThrottleStop). |
| Old Drivers | Clean install latest NVIDIA/AMD/Intel drivers (DDU tool for clean wipe). |
| HDD Bottleneck | Install games on SSD/NVMe. HDD causes texture pop-in, long loads. |
| Windows Bloat | Debloat script (ChrisTitusTech), disable telemetry, game mode ON, hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling ON. |
"Minimum" = 720p/30fps Low. "Recommended" = 1080p/60fps High. For 1440p/4K or high refresh, you need 1–2 tiers above recommended.
Bottom line: A well-maintained PC with adequate specs runs games smoothly and returns to full speed instantly after. Games don't "wear out" your computer.
