Can You Play Goldfields on Mac? No Official Version — Workarounds Inside

There is no native macOS version of Goldfields (1995, Strategic Simulations). It was released for DOS and Windows 3.1/95 only.

Workarounds to Run It on Mac

1. DOSBox (Best for Original DOS Version) — Free, Native ARM/Apple Silicon Support

  1. Install DOSBox (or DOSBox-Staging for better macOS integration).
  2. Mount your game folder: `Z:\> mount c ~/Games/Goldfields`.
  3. Run: `c:\> gold.exe` (or `gfields.exe`).
  4. Configure `dosbox.conf`: `cycles=auto`, `output=opengl`, `aspect=true`.

2. Wine / CrossOver (For Windows 95 Version) — Hit or Miss

  • 16-bit Windows apps don't run on 64-bit macOS (Catalina+). Wine *can* run 16-bit via `winevdm` but it's fragile.
  • CrossOver (paid) has better 16-bit bottles. Try "Windows 95" bottle template.
  • GOG.com version? None exists for Goldfields.

3. Virtual Machine (Most Compatible) — UTM (Free, Apple Silicon Native)

  1. Install UTM.
  2. Create VM: **Windows 95 / 98 SE / XP** (ISO required).
  3. Install Goldfields inside VM. Share folders for saves.
  4. Performance: Near-native for 1995 game.

4. Browser-Based (If Someone Ported It)

Similar Games Native on Mac

Recommendation: Use **UTM + Windows 98 SE** for authentic Goldfields. Or play **Cities: Skylines II** for modern depth.
