Why You Can't Just Burn a PC DVD Game to a Disc (And What to Do Instead)

Burning a PC DVD game to a blank disc and expecting it to play simply doesn't work. Retail PC DVDs contain an installer (setup.exe, .msi, data.cab) that installs to your hard drive—the disc isn't bootable or runnable directly. Copy protection (SecuROM, SafeDisc, StarForce, Tages, Denuvo) verifies physical disc signatures like wobble grooves, ATIP, bad sectors, or twin sectors that consumer burners (DVD-R/+R) cannot replicate. The game executable also checks for the original disc signature in the drive, failing on burned copies. Multi-disc installs spanning .cab files across discs break paths when burned as a single ISO.

✅ What You Can Do (Legal Backup)

  1. Create an ISO Image: Use ImgBurn (free) → "Create image file from disc" → .iso / .mds+.mdf (preserves layer break). For personal backup only (legal gray area/DMCA 1201).
  2. Mount a Virtual Drive: WinCDEmu (open source), DAEMON Tools, Virtual CloneDrive. Mount the ISO; the game thinks the disc is inserted. Bypasses physical drive, NOT DRM.
  3. No-CD / Fixed EXE (Gray Area): Community patches (GameCopyWorld, Megagames) replace the executable to skip disc checks. Technically a DMCA violation (circumvention). Use only on games you own.
  4. Digital Re-purchase (Best): Buy on GOG.com (DRM-free installers), Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, EA App. Often under $5 on sale. Includes cloud saves, achievements, and Win10/11 compatibility patches.

💾 Preservation (Advanced)

  • Redump.org: Database of verified hashes (CRC32, SHA1, MD5) for perfect 1:1 disc images.
  • Plextor / Optiarc Drives: Only drives capable of reading raw sectors (D8 command) for true preservation dumps.
  • DOSBox / Win9x VM: For pre-2000 games (DOS/Win95/98).

Bottom Line: Don't burn. Mount the ISO via virtual drive or rebuy DRM-free on GOG.
