How to Program Video Games: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Game programming is a multidisciplinary craft. Here's a structured path from idea to release.

1. Concept & Design

  • Core Loop: What does the player do moment-to-moment? (Jump, shoot, build, decide.)
  • Game Design Document (GDD): Outline mechanics, systems, levels, art style, scope, target platform.
  • Scope Small: First game = Pong, Flappy Bird, or a single-room platformer. Finish it.

2. Choose an Engine

Unreal EngineC++ / BlueprintsHigh-fidelity 3D, AAA, multiplayerSteep
GodotGDScript (Python-like)2D-focused, open-source, lightweightGentle

3. Core Programming Skills

  • Game Loop: Update (logic) / Draw (render) at 60 FPS.
  • Input Handling: Keyboard, mouse, gamepad, touch.
  • Physics/Collision: Rigidbodies, raycasts, triggers.
  • State Machines: Player states (idle, run, jump, attack).
  • Data-Driven Design: ScriptableObjects / JSON for items, stats, dialogue.
  • Debugging & Profiling: Logs, breakpoints, frame-time analysis.

4. Art, Audio & Polish

  • Placeholder assets first (Kenney.nl, OpenGameArt, itch.io free packs).
  • Learn basics of Aseprite (pixel art), Blender (3D), Audacity (SFX), Bosca Ceoil (music).
  • Juice it: screenshake, particles, sound variation, animation curves.

5. Level Design & Progression

  • Paper sketches → greybox (primitives) → art pass.
  • Teach mechanics through level geometry (no tutorials needed).
  • Pacing: tension → release → new mechanic → combo.

6. Test, Iterate, Ship

  • Playtest early, often, with strangers. Watch—don't explain.
  • Fix bugs, balance difficulty, cut scope.
  • Build for target platform(s). Submit to stores (Steam, App Store, itch.io).
  • Market: trailer, screenshots, devlog, community.

Essential Practices

  • Version Control: Git (GitHub/GitLab) from day one.
  • Documentation: Comment code; maintain a changelog.
  • Community: r/gamedev, Discord servers, Game Jams (Ludum Dare, GMTK).
  • Lifelong Learning: Graphics pipelines, ECS architecture, networking, shaders.

Start this weekend. Pick an engine, follow a "Roll-a-Ball" or "Platformer" tutorial, and finish a 5-minute playable build.
