Best Gaming PC for $300? Reality Check & Better Alternatives

Short answer: A $300 budget cannot build a new PC that runs modern AAA titles (Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, Warzone) at 30-40 FPS on Medium settings. Current GPU prices alone (e.g., RTX 3050 / RX 6600 ~$200-250 used) exceed the budget when adding CPU, RAM, SSD, PSU, case, and OS.

Realistic $300 Options

  • Used Office PC + GPU Upgrade: Buy a used Dell OptiPlex / HP ProDesk (i5-6500/7500 or Ryzen 5 2400G) for ~$100-150. Add a used GTX 1050 Ti / RX 570 / GTX 1650 (~$80-120). Result: Plays eSports titles (Valorant, CS2, Fortnite, Rocket League) at 1080p High 60+ FPS. AAA games at 720p Low 30 FPS.
  • APU Build (No Discrete GPU): Ryzen 5 5600G / 8600G (~$140-180) + 16GB DDR4 + B550 Mobo + SSD + Case/PSU. Result: Strong 1080p Low/Medium in older AAA (GTA V, Witcher 3) and great eSports performance. Newer AAA unplayable.
  • Used Console: PS4 / Xbox One S / Xbox Series S (refurbished ~$200-280). Best price/performance for AAA gaming at 1080p/1440p 30-60 FPS.
  • Cloud Gaming: GeForce Now (Free / Priority tiers), Xbox Cloud Gaming (via Game Pass Ultimate). Requires 25+ Mbps wired/5GHz Wi-Fi. Runs on any laptop/phone/tablet/TV.

Recommendation

Save to $500-600 for a true entry-level 1080p AAA build (Ryzen 5 5500/5600 + RX 6600/7600). Until then, a used console or cloud gaming offers a vastly superior experience.
