Do You Have to Install PC Games to Play? Generally Yes—Exceptions: Browser, Cloud, Portable

Generally, yes. Installation unpacks assets, writes registry keys, installs dependencies (DirectX, VC++ runtimes, drivers), and creates shortcuts.

Exceptions (No Install)

  • Browser games: Run in HTML5/WebGL/WASM (itch.io, CrazyGames, .io games).
  • Cloud gaming: GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud, Luna — streamed, nothing local.
  • Portable / "green" apps: Some indie games (zip → run .exe) — no installer, but still write config/saves to AppData.
  • GOG offline installers: Single .exe extracts to folder — still "installing" but no system integration.

Why Install?

  • Performance: Assets on fast SSD, not optical/USB.
  • Dependencies: Correct DLLs, drivers, APIs.
  • Updates: Patch management.
  • DRM / license verification.

SSD + modern installer (Steam, Epic, GOG) = 1–5 min for most games. Worth it.
