Running Fullscreen Games in a Window for Multitasking

You cannot natively convert a **Exclusive Fullscreen** game into a movable window. Exclusive mode takes direct GPU control. However, these solutions achieve the goal:

1. In-Game Settings (Best Performance)

  • Borderless Windowed / Windowed Fullscreen: Most modern games (DX11/12, Vulkan) offer this. Renders at desktop resolution, alt-tabs instantly.
  • Windowed Mode: Resizable window; may run lower res.

2. Third-Party Tools (Force Borderless)

  • Borderless Gaming (Free, Open Source): GitHub. Adds tray icon; right-click game → "Make Borderless." Works on 90% of DX9-DX11 titles.
  • Special K (Advanced): Kaldaien/SpecialK. Injects at launch; adds HDR, frame pacing, borderless, latency tools. Per-game profiles.
  • DisplayFusion (Paid / Free Trial): "Window Position" profiles; move game window to specific monitor/size via hotkey.

3. Chat Overlay Alternatives

  • Discord Overlay (Default: Shift+`): Pins chat/voice over *any* fullscreen game. Settings → Game Overlay → Enable.
  • Steam Overlay (Shift+Tab): Web browser, chat, guides inside game.
  • Xbox Game Bar (Win+G): Windows native; widgets for Discord, Spotify, Xbox Chat, performance overlay.

4. Hardware Solution

  • Second Monitor: Game fullscreen on Monitor 1; Discord/Browser/OBS on Monitor 2. Zero software overhead.

Caveats

  • Borderless adds ~1-2 frames latency (DWM composition).
  • Some anti-cheat (Valorant Vanguard, Faceit, BattlEye) **block injection tools** (Special K, Borderless Gaming). Use in-game Borderless only.
  • Older games (DX7-9 pre-2010) often crash if forced borderless.
