PS4: Console Architecture Deep Dive (Not Just a Controller)

The PlayStation 4 is a home video game console—a dedicated computer for gaming and media—not merely a controller. The DualShock 4 is an input peripheral; the console itself contains the computational hardware.

PS4 Internal Architecture

  • APU (CPU+GPU): AMD "Liverpool" — Jaguar 8-core x86-64 @ 1.6-2.1 GHz + GCN 18 Compute Units @ 800-911 MHz (~1.84 TFLOPS)
  • Memory: 8 GB GDDR5 Unified Memory @ 176 GB/s bandwidth (shared CPU/GPU pool—key architectural advantage)
  • Storage: 500 GB / 1 TB / 2 TB 2.5" SATA HDD (user-replaceable with standard laptop drives)
  • Optical Drive: 6x CAV Blu-ray / DVD / CD
  • I/O: HDMI 1.4/2.0, USB 3.0 (x2), Gigabit Ethernet, AUX (Camera), Optical Audio (launch/Pro models), Power
  • Operating System: Orbis OS (FreeBSD 9 derivative) with proprietary PlayStation runtime

DualShock 4 Controller

  • Input device: Dual analog sticks, face buttons, D-pad, triggers, touchpad, light bar, motion sensors, speaker, 3.5mm headset jack
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1+EDR or USB 2.0
  • Battery: Internal 1000mAh Li-ion (8-10 hour typical)
  • Useless without the console—no standalone processing capability

PS4 Model Variations

  • Original (CUH-1xxx): 500GB, glossy/top matte split, touchpad click issue, optical audio out
  • Slim (CUH-2xxx): 30% smaller, 16% lighter, 500GB/1TB, matte finish, no optical audio, improved Wi-Fi/BT
  • Pro (CUH-7xxx): 2x GPU (36 CUs, 4.2 TFLOPS), 1TB standard, 4K checkerboard rendering, Boost Mode for legacy titles

The console is the brain. The controller is the nervous system. Both essential, but fundamentally different categories of hardware.
