Putting Games on a Portable Media Player (PMP)

Typical Portable Media Players (PMPs)—designed for music, video, and photos—cannot run games. They lack:

  • Sufficient CPU/GPU for real-time rendering.
  • Gaming-oriented OS (no input API, no game framework).
  • Adequate RAM/storage for game assets.
  • Physical controls (touchscreen-only is poor for most genres).

Devices Actually Built for Portable Gaming

  • Handheld consoles: Nintendo Switch / Switch Lite / OLED, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, PlayStation Vita (used), 3DS/2DS (used).
  • Smartphones / Tablets: iOS/Android run thousands of native games + cloud streaming (Xbox Cloud, GeForce NOW).
  • DIY emulation handhelds: Retroid Pocket, Anbernic, Miyoo, AYN Odin — run RetroArch/Lakka for classic consoles.
  • Raspberry Pi + case + screen: Custom emulation box (technical setup required).

Don't force a PMP to be a game machine. Buy a device designed for play.
