Who Created Gaming?

No single person "created gaming." It's a centuries-long evolution of technology, culture, and human play.

Ancient & Mechanical Roots

  • Board/tabletop games: Chess (6th c.), Go (4th c. BCE), Backgammon (5,000 yrs) — structured rules, competition.
  • Mechanical amusements (19th c.): Pinball (bagatelle → spring-launched), fortune tellers, strength testers — coin-operated, physical interaction.

Birth of Electronic Video Games (1950s–60s)

  • Alan Turing: Theoretical foundations of computation (1936) — enabled digital games.
  • William Higinbotham: Tennis for Two (1958) — oscilloscope, analog computer, first interactive electronic game.
  • Steve Russell et al.: Spacewar! (1962, PDP-1) — first digital video game intended for computer use, multiplayer, physics simulation.

Commercialization (1970s)

  • Nolan Bushnell / Ted Dabney (Atari): Computer Space (1971, first arcade), Pong (1972, commercial breakthrough).
  • Ralph Baer (Magnavox): Odyssey (1972) — first home console.
  • Tomohiro Nishikado (Taito): Space Invaders (1978) — global phenomenon, high scores, microprocessor arcade.

Golden Age & Home Computing (1980s)

  • Pac-Man (Namco, 1980), Donkey Kong (Nintendo, 1981), Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, 1985) — characters, scrolling, console revival.
  • Home computers (C64, ZX Spectrum, Apple II, IBM PC) — bedroom coders, shareware, genres born.

Modern Eras

  • 1990s: 3D (PS1, N64), online (Quake, Ultima Online), PC golden age.
  • 2000s: PS2/Xbox/GCN, broadband, Xbox Live, Steam, WoW, mobile (Java/BREW).
  • 2010s–Present: Mobile dominance (iOS/Android), F2P/GaaS, esports mainstream, VR/AR, cloud gaming, AI-assisted dev.

Gaming is a collective, ongoing creation—shaped by engineers, artists, designers, writers, players, and cultural moments. No single origin; infinite contributors.
