Record Xbox 360 Gameplay via PC Using Same Monitor? You Need a Capture Card

You cannot record Xbox 360 gameplay by simply sharing a monitor. The monitor displays one input at a time; PC capture software needs a video signal input, not a shared display.

Correct Capture Methods

  • Capture card (internal/PCIe): Elgato HD60 Pro, AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K. Xbox 360 HDMI → capture card HDMI in → capture card HDMI out → monitor. PC records via software (OBS, Elgato).
  • Capture card (USB): Elgato HD60 S+, AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus. Same flow, USB 3.0 to PC.
  • Xbox 360 built-in DVR: Limited to 5-min clips, 720p, saved to HDD. Upload to OneDrive/Xbox Live, then download to PC. No live commentary.
  • Component + analog capture: For non-HDMI 360 models. Lower quality, requires component capture device.

What Doesn't Work

  • HDMI splitter → monitor + PC (PC HDMI port is output only)
  • Software-only (OBS) without capture hardware—no video source

Budget pick: Used Elgato HD60 (non-S) ~$50–$70 on eBay. Works with OBS on Windows/macOS/Linux.
