Universal Characteristics

Material: Primarily cardboard (2-ply: printed liner + gray backing) or wood (laser-cut birch/maple). Plastic (acrylic, PET) for premium/3D.
Interlocking mechanism: Tabs (knobs/outies) and blanks (pockets/innies) on edges. Precision die-cut (cardboard) or laser (wood) ensures tight fit.
Image fragment: Each piece carries a unique portion of the complete picture — continuous tone, not solid color (usually).
Irregular perimeter: No two pieces identical (ideally). Edge shapes vary: curved, jagged, wavy, straight.

Standard (Random): Each edge independently tab or blank. 2⁴ = 16 possible edge-configurations per piece.
Ribbon / Strip Cut: Rows of identical pieces (old/cheap). Avoid.
Grid Cut: Uniform tabs/blanks in rows/columns (mass market).
Random Cut (Premium): Ravensburger, Clementoni, Buffalo — each piece unique; "whimsy" shapes (animals, objects) in image.

Whimsies / Figural pieces: Shaped like birds, flowers, letters — matching image content. Signature of high-end wooden (Wentworth, Liberty) and premium cardboard (Ravensburger "Softclick").
False edges: Inner pieces with straight edge — trick you into placing them on border.
Double tabs / double blanks: Two tabs or two blanks on opposite edges — increases difficulty.
Micro pieces: <1 cm² (e.g., 40,320-piece "Memorable Disney Moments" — pieces ~0.5 cm).
