How to Sort and Solve Different Puzzle Types: Jigsaw, Crossword, Word Search, Logic

Jigsaw Puzzles

  1. Edge First: Separate all flat-edged pieces; build the border.
  2. Sort by Color/Pattern: Group distinct areas (sky, grass, red barn).
  3. Identify Unique Shapes: Knobs/holes, minifig details, text.
  4. Section Assembly: Build clusters off-frame; merge later.
  5. Use Trays/Mats: Portable sorting; roll-up mat preserves progress.

Crosswords

  1. Scan for Fill-in-the-Blanks: Easiest entry points.
  2. Short Words (3-4 letters): High cross-frequency (ERA, ALE, ORE).
  3. Cross-Check: Use crossing letters to infer unknowns.
  4. Theme Detection: Title/long answers reveal wordplay pattern.
  5. Pencil/Erase: Digital apps allow guess-and-check.

Word Searches

  1. Scan Rows/Columns/Diagonals for first letter of target word.
  2. Highlight Found Words to avoid re-finding.
  3. Look for Uncommon Letters (Q, X, Z, J) as anchors.

Logic Puzzles (Grid/Deduction)

  1. Read All Clues First.
  2. Build Grid: Categories × Options. Mark ✓ (yes) and ✗ (no).
  3. Direct Deductions: Fill certainties.
  4. Transitive Inference: A=B, B≠C → A≠C.
  5. Hypothesis Test: Guess a binary choice; if contradiction, reverse.

General Tips

  • Take breaks; fresh eyes spot patterns.
