How to Create Your Own Tabletop RPG (Paper RPG)

Designing a Paper RPG: From Concept to Playtest

Creating a tabletop RPG is a massive creative undertaking. Here's a structured roadmap:

1. Core Concept (The "Elevator Pitch")

  • Genre/Setting: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, Historical, Urban Fantasy, Mecha, Surreal...
  • Core Activity: What do players *do*? (Dungeon crawl, political intrigue, survival, mystery, mech combat, relationship drama).
  • Unique Hook: What makes it different? (e.g., "No dice, only Jenga tower" — Dread; "Play as the dungeon" — Wicked Ones; "Cards, not dice" — Fate).

2. System Design (The Engine)

  • Resolution Mechanic: Dice pool (d6, d10), d20+mod, 2d6+stat (PbtA), cards, tokens, resource spend, narrative negotiation.
  • Character Definition: Attributes, Skills, Classes/Playbooks, Archetypes, Drives/Keys, Relationships.
  • Progression: XP/Levels, Milestones, Narrative advancement, Equipment, Domain management.
  • Conflict Systems: Combat (tactical vs narrative), Social, Investigation, Travel, Downtime.
  • GM Tools: Threat clocks, Fronts, Random tables, Scene framing, Safety tools (X-Card, Lines/Veils).

3. Setting & Content

  • Geography, History, Factions, Cosmology, Technology/Magic systems, Bestiary, NPCs, Adventure hooks.
  • Start small: **One region, one conflict, 3-5 factions.** Expand later.

4. Physical/Digital Production

  • Core Rulebook: Rules, setting, character creation, GM guide, introductory adventure.
  • Character Sheets: Clear, functional, printable (PDF) + form-fillable + VTT-ready (Foundry, Roll20).
  • Reference Cards: Moves, conditions, weapons, spells.
  • Art/Layout: InDesign/Affinity/Google Docs + Creative Commons art or commission.

5. Iterative Playtesting (The Real Work)

  1. Solo Playtest: Run combats/scenarios yourself. Math check probabilities.
  2. Internal Playtest: Friends. Observe confusion, boredom, breakage. Record sessions.
  3. Blind Playtest: Strangers run it *without you*. Critical for clarity of rules text.
  4. Revise Ruthlessly: Cut subsystems that don't serve the core loop. Simplify math.

6. Publishing

  • Free PDF: itch.io, DriveThruRPG (PWYW). Build community.
  • Print on Demand: DriveThruRPG, Lulu. Softcover/Hardcover.
  • Crowdfunding: Kickstarter/BackerKit for art, editing, print run. High effort.
  • SRD / Open License: Release core mechanics under ORC, CC-BY, or custom license for 3rd party support.

Study the Masters

Read widely: D&D 5e (mainstream), Blades in the Dark (fiction-first), Mörk Borg (minimalist), GURPS (simulation), FATE (narrative), Apocalypse World (PbtA engine), Troika! (weird), Lasers & Feelings (one-page). Steal mechanics, remix, make yours.

Start small. Finish a one-shot. Then expand.
