Why Call of Duty Campaigns Are Strictly Single-Player

If you're hoping to team up with a friend for a Call of Duty campaign, you're out of luck. Mainline Call of Duty campaigns have always been strictly single-player experiences—no split-screen, no online co-op, and no "second player joins" mechanic.

Co-op Modes That Actually Exist in Call of Duty

While the campaigns are solo-only, the franchise offers plenty of cooperative gameplay elsewhere:

Spec Ops / Special OpsModern Warfare 2 (2009), MW3 (2011), MW (2019), MWII (2022)2 (local/online)Missions, Survival, Raids (3-player)

Why No Campaign Co-op?

  • Scripted cinematic pacing: Set pieces, quick-time events, and a solo-focused narrative.
  • AI squadmates: Characters like Price, Soap, and Ghost are designed for solo command.
  • Technical limitations: Checkpoint systems, trigger volumes, and level streaming assume a single player.

Workarounds for Playing Together

  • Pass-the-Controller: Hotseat style—share the story.
  • Remote Play / Share Play: Friend watches, you play (PS4/PS5 Share Play, Steam Remote Play Together).
  • Mods (PC): Some campaigns have co-op mods (e.g., MW2 2009 Co-op Mod), though they're often unstable.

If you're craving a co-op shooter campaign, consider Halo (all), Gears of War (all), Borderlands, Destiny 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Remnant 2, or Outriders.
