Courses & Skills to Become a Game Designer

No single degree guarantees a design job—employers want a portfolio + demonstrated skills. Core areas to study:

Essential Foundations

  • Game Design Theory: Mechanics, systems, loops, balance, player psychology (books: Rules of Play, Game Design Workshop).
  • Scripting/Programming: C# (Unity), C++ (Unreal), Python—enough to prototype alone.
  • Level/World Design: Layout, pacing, signposting, environmental storytelling.
  • Narrative Design: Writing, branching dialogue, lore integration.
  • UX/UI: Menus, HUD, onboarding, accessibility.

Recommended Course Types (College / Online)

  • Game Design Fundamentals (Coursera, edX, MIT OpenCourseWare)
  • Unity / Unreal Engine Certified Courses
  • Computer Science basics (CS50, Harvard)
  • Interactive Storytelling / Narrative Design
  • 2D/3D Art Basics (Blender, Photoshop, Aseprite)
  • Project Management (Agile, Scrum, Jira)
  • Playtesting & Data-Driven Design

Beyond Courses

  • Make small games: Game jams (Ludum Dare, Global Game Jam) – finish projects.
  • Build a portfolio: 3–5 playable prototypes with post-mortems.
  • Analyze games: Deconstruct systems in your favorite titles.
  • Network: Discord communities, local IGDA chapters, GDC talks.

Passion + finished projects > degree alone. Start making games today.
