Madden 09 Player Progression: Development Traits and Factors

Madden NFL 09 uses a Development Trait system (hidden initially, visible in Franchise editing) to govern how players improve week-to-week.

Development Trait Tiers (Speed of Growth)

  1. Star (Fast): Rapid gains; reaches full potential quickly. (Usually elite rookies).
  2. Franchise (Above Avg): Steady gains; reaches potential reliably. (Core starters).
  3. Role Player (Average): Slow gains; may approach potential. (Solid backups/starters).
  4. Average (Below Avg): Very slow gains; unlikely to hit ceiling. (Depth players).
  5. Below Average (Slowest): Minimal gains; effectively static. (Camp bodies, old vets).

Key Factors Influencing Weekly XP Gain

  • Age: Younger players (rookies, 2nd year) gain significantly more XP. Growth curves flatten sharply after age 28-30.
  • Playing Time: Starters > Rotational > Inactive. Snaps played directly correlate to XP earned.
  • Performance: High grades (A+/A) yield bonus XP. Low grades (D/F) yield minimal XP.
  • Practice / Training Camp: Allocating focus points in the weekly training screen boosts specific attributes.
  • Coaching Staff: Coordinators/Head Coach with high "Development" ratings accelerate growth for position groups.
  • Team Chemistry / Scheme Fit: Players fitting the scheme gain slightly faster.

Progression Mechanics

Each week, players earn XP (Experience Points) based on the above. XP is spent automatically to increase attributes toward their Potential ceiling (0-100 scale). Once Potential is reached, growth stops.

Critical Rules

  • Trade Deadline: Players acquired after the deadline do not progress for the remainder of that season.
  • Injuries: Injured players earn reduced/no XP while sidelined.
  • Retirement: Progress halts immediately upon retirement.

Maximize development by starting young players with high Dev Traits, scheming them into playtime, and hiring developmental coaches.
