Adding Players to Your Game: Design & Implementation Guide

To help you add multiplayer, I need your game context. Answer these:

1. Game Type & Platform

  • Video game? (Unity, Unreal, Godot, GameMaker, custom engine, web)
  • Board / Card / TTRPG? (Physical, Tabletop Simulator, Roll20)
  • Mobile? (iOS/Android, native / Flutter / React Native)

2. Current Architecture

  • Single-player only? Local multiplayer (shared screen / split-screen / pass-and-play)?
  • Networked? (Peer-to-peer, client-server, relay, dedicated server)
  • Turn-based or real-time?

3. Player Mechanics

  • What does a player do? (Move, shoot, build, vote, trade, roleplay)
  • Shared state? (World, score, turn order, deck, economy)
  • Max players target?

4. Goal

  • Co-op? Competitive? Asymmetric? Social deduction? MMO-lite?

Based on Answers, I Can Guide:

  • Design: State replication, authority, latency compensation, join-in-progress, host migration.
  • Engine-Specific: Unity Netcode for GameObjects / Photon / Mirror / FishNet; Unreal GAS / Replication Graph; Godot Multiplayer API / Nakama / ENet.
  • Backend: Steam P2P, Epic OSS, Photon Cloud, PlayFab, GameSparks, custom (Node/Go/Rust + WebSocket/UDP).
  • UX: Lobby, matchmaking, invite codes, cross-play, voice/chat integration.

Reply with your engine, genre, current max players, and networking experience level. I'll give a concrete next step.
