Types of Supporting Characters Who Help the Protagonist – Archetypes & Functions

There are many archetypes for a minor character who aids the main character, each serving a distinct narrative function:

Broad Categories

  • Sidekick: Loyal companion; provides comic relief, emotional support, and practical aid (e.g., Samwise Gamgee, Robin).
  • Supporting Character: General term for any significant non-protagonist role.
  • Helper/Ally: Functional role—assists with specific tasks or information.
  • Mentor: Imparts wisdom, training, or moral guidance (e.g., Obi-Wan Kenobi, Gandalf).

Specialized Roles

  • Wise Elder: Provides cryptic advice or lore.
  • Love Interest: Emotional anchor and motivation.
  • Comic Relief: Lightens tension; contrasts protagonist's gravity.
  • Tech Expert / Hacker: Solves technical obstacles.
  • Informant / Spy: Delivers critical intelligence.
  • Reluctant Ally: Helps despite conflicting goals; adds tension.
  • Foil: Highlights protagonist's traits by contrast.

Choosing the Right Term

Depends on the character's relationship to the protagonist, narrative weight, and thematic purpose. A "sidekick" implies closeness; a "mentor" implies hierarchy; an "informant" implies transactional help.
