What Does Game Mode on a TV Do?

Core Function: Reduce Input Lag

Game Mode is a picture preset that minimizes the delay between your controller input and the resulting action on screen (input lag).

How It Works

  • Disables Post-Processing: Turns off motion smoothing (MEMC), noise reduction, dynamic contrast, edge enhancement, and other algorithms that add 20–100+ ms latency.
  • Bypasses Video Scaling: Sends native resolution directly to panel when possible.
  • Prioritizes Frame Pipeline: Allocates processor cycles to frame delivery over image "enhancement."
  • May Adjust Color/Gamma: Some TVs shift to a brighter, higher-contrast preset for visibility in dark games.

Why It Matters

  • Competitive Shooters/Fighters: 1 frame (16 ms) can decide a gunfight or combo.
  • Rhythm/Action Games: Tight timing windows feel fair.
  • General Feel: Even casual play feels "snappier" and more connected.

How to Enable

  • Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM): HDMI 2.1 TVs + Xbox Series X|S / PS5 switch automatically.
  • Manual: Picture Settings > Picture Mode > Game (or "PC" on some models).
  • Per-Input: Some TVs remember mode per HDMI port; set it on the console's input.

Note: Game Mode may make the image look slightly "rawer" (less smoothed). This is intentional—accuracy over artificial prettiness.
