Why Won't Guitar Hero World Tour Work on Some TVs?

Guitar Hero World Tour (GHWT) on Wii/PS3/360 can fail on certain TVs due to **video signal compatibility**, **latency**, or **handshake issues**.

Common Causes

  • HDMI Handshake / EDID Failure: TV doesn’t report supported resolutions correctly. Console defaults to 1080p/60 — TV only does 1080i or 720p. Result: Black screen, “No Signal,” or flicker.
  • Resolution Mismatch: GHWT forces 720p/1080i on PS3/360. Some early HDTVs (2006–2009) only accept 1080i via Component, not HDMI. Wii outputs 480p/480i — some HDTVs deinterlace poorly → lag.
  • Input Lag / Game Mode: TVs without “Game Mode” add 50–150ms post-processing. Rhythm games become unplayable. GHWT has **Calibration** (Options → Calibrate) but can’t fix display lag.
  • Cable Quality: Cheap/long HDMI cables fail at 1080p. Component cables with poor shielding = ghosting.
  • TV Scaling Issues: Non-native resolution scaling (e.g., 720p game on 1080p TV with bad scaler) adds lag/artifacts.
  • Firmware Bugs: Specific TV models (early Vizio, Westinghouse, Insignia, Olevia) had known GHWT incompatibilities patched in later FW.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Enable Game Mode / PC Mode on TV (disables post-processing).
  2. Set Console Output Manually:
    • PS3: Settings > Display > Video Output > Custom > Uncheck 1080p, keep 720p/1080i.
    • 360: Settings > Display > HDTV Settings > 720p.
    • Wii: Wii Settings > Screen > 480p (if component) / 480i.
  3. Try Different Cable / Port: HDMI 1 vs 2. Component vs HDMI.
  4. Update TV Firmware: Check manufacturer site via USB.
  5. Calibrate In-Game: Options > Calibrate > Audio/Video. Use headphones for audio sync.
  6. Test on Another TV: Isolate console vs. TV.

If it works on another TV, the problem TV has a scaler/EDID/lag issue. No software fix on console side.
