Can You Return a Video Game Without Its Case?

It depends entirely on the retailer's policy. General guidelines:

Physical Stores (GameStop, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Local Shops)

  • Standard Policy: Require original case, manual, disc in good condition for full refund/exchange.
  • Exceptions: Some accept disc-only for reduced trade-in value (GameStop: ~50% of cased value). Damaged case may be swapped for generic sleeve.
  • Time Window: Usually 7–30 days with receipt; 90 days for members (Best Buy Totaltech, GameStop Pro).

Online Retailers (Amazon, Walmart.com, eBay Sellers)

  • Amazon: "Video Games" return policy: 30 days, shrinkwrap/seal intact for new; used from Warehouse Deals may accept disc-only with grading downgrade.
  • eBay: Seller-defined. Many require case for "Complete in Box" listing. Disc-only = "Acceptable" condition, lower price.

Digital Stores (Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo eShop, Epic)

  • No returns for digital licenses (Steam: 2hr/14-day refund window if played <2hrs; console stores: generally no refunds after download).
  • Case irrelevant—no physical media.

Best Practice

  1. Keep cases/manuals.
  2. Contact seller before shipping return without case.
  3. Photograph disc condition (both sides) for dispute evidence.
