How to Make a Video Game: Complete Beginner Roadmap (Phases, Skills, Tools)

Game development is multidisciplinary. This roadmap breaks it into phases, skills, tools, and actionable steps.

Phase 1: Concept & Pre-Production (Weeks 1–4)

  • Core Loop: Define the 30-second fun cycle (e.g., “move → shoot → loot → upgrade”).
  • Game Design Document (GDD): One-pager: genre, target player, core mechanics, win/lose, progression, scope.
  • Paper Prototype: Sketch levels, UI, systems on paper/index cards. Test logic before code.
  • Reference Games: List 3–5 games to study. Deconstruct their mechanics.

Phase 2: Choose Engine & Learn Basics (Weeks 2–8)

EngineBest ForLanguageFirst Tutorial
Godot 42D/3D, open-source, lightweightGDScript (Python-like)GDQuest “Godot 4 Complete Course” (free)
Unity2D/3D, huge ecosystem, jobsC#Unity Learn “Junior Programmer” / Brackeys
GameMaker2D, fast iteration, indie hitsGMLHeartBeast “Make an RPG” / Shaun Spalding
Unreal Engine3D, high-fidelity, BlueprintsC++ / BlueprintsUnreal Online Learning “Your First Game”

Commit to ONE engine for 6 months.

Phase 3: Build Micro-Projects (Weeks 4–12)

  1. Pong / Breakout — Input, collision, win condition.
  2. Flappy Bird / Endless Runner — Spawning, scrolling, scoring, game over.
  3. Top-Down Shooter — Movement, aiming, enemies, health, particles.
  4. Platformer — Physics (gravity, jump, Coyote time), state machine, camera.
  5. Mini-RPG / Zelda-like — Tilemaps, NPCs, dialogue, inventory, save system.

Each project: Finish it. Polish juice (screenshake, sound, particles). Post on itch.io for feedback.

Phase 4: Your First “Real” Game (Months 4–12+)

  • Scope Tiny: 1 mechanic, 3 levels, 1 boss, 30-min playtime.
  • Vertical Slice: Build one complete level with all systems working.
  • Iterate Weekly: Playtest → fix → add → polish.
  • Art/Audio: Use Kenney.nl, OpenGameArt, itch.io free assets. Learn Aseprite (pixel art), Audacity/BSFXR (sfx), Bosca Ceoil (music).

Essential Skills to Develop

  • Programming: Variables, loops, functions, OOP/ECS, state machines, coroutines/async, data structures.
  • Math: Vectors, trig, lerp, dot/cross product, transforms.
  • Architecture: Singleton, Observer, Component, ScriptableObject, Scene management.
  • Version Control: Git + GitHub/GitLab (commit daily, branch per feature).

Communities & Resources

  • Reddit: r/gamedev, r/Unity3D, r/godot, r/gamemaker
  • Discord: Engine-specific servers, “Game Dev League,” “Indie Devs”
  • Game Jams: Ludum Dare, GMTK, Brackeys Jam — best way to finish games fast.
  • Post-Mortems: Read on GDC Vault, Game Developer, dev blogs.

Golden Rule: Finish things. A bad finished game teaches more than a perfect unfinished one.
