How to Make a First-Person Shooter Game: Complete Development Roadmap

1. Choose Engine & Language

  • Unreal Engine 5 (C++ / Blueprints): AAA quality, best FPS template, steep learning curve.
  • Unity (C#): Accessible, huge asset store, good FPS kits (UFPS, GameKit).
  • Godot 4 (GDScript / C#): Free, open-source, lightweight, rising for 3D.

2. Core FPS Systems to Build

  • Character Controller: Capsule collision, slope handling, step offset, crouch/prone.
  • Camera: First-person view, head bob, FOV, lean, recoil patterns.
  • Weapon System: Hitscan vs projectile, spread, recoil, reload, animations, attachments.
  • Health/Damage: Hitboxes, armor, damage types, regeneration, death/ragdoll.
  • Movement: Sprint, slide, vault, mantle, wall-run (if tactical).
  • AI: Navigation (NavMesh), behavior trees, cover, flanking, suppression.

3. Art & Content Pipeline

  • Modeling: Blender (free), Maya, Max — low-poly + LODs.
  • Texturing: Substance Painter, Quixel — PBR workflow.
  • Animation: Mixamo (free rigs), custom in Blender.
  • Level Design: Graybox → Art pass → Lighting → Optimization.
  • Audio: FMOD / Wwise — spatial, layered, adaptive.

4. Multiplayer (If Needed)

  • Netcode: Client-server (authoritative), lag compensation, prediction, reconciliation.
  • Frameworks: Netcode for GameObjects (Unity), GAS + Replication (Unreal), ENet / Nakama (custom).
  • Matchmaking / Lobby: Steamworks, Epic OSS, custom backend.

5. Learn & Iterate

  • Tutorials: Unreal FPS Template, Unity FPS Microgame, Godot FPS tutorials (YouTube: Brackeys, GDQuest, Ryan Laley).
  • Communities: r/gamedev, r/unrealengine, r/Unity3D, r/godot, Discord servers.
  • Scope Small: Single level, 1 weapon, 1 enemy type → finish → expand.

Start with a “gun that shoots cubes”—iterate daily. Finished > perfect.
