What Is Brink? (2011 FPS with Parkour, Class-Based Team Play)

Brink is a class-based, parkour-infused first-person shooter developed by Splash Damage, published by Bethesda (2011, PC/PS3/Xbox 360).

Setting

A floating city, The Ark, once an eco-utopia, now a crowded refugee flashpoint after rising seas. Two factions fight: Security (status quo) vs. Resistance (equality).

Core Gameplay

  • S.M.A.R.T. Movement: Sprint, Mantle, Ascend, Rappel, Traverse – fluid parkour via one button (hold Sprint).
  • Four Classes: Soldier (ammo/heavy weapons), Medic (heal/revive), Engineer (turrets/armor), Operative (hack/disguise).
  • Objective-Based Maps: No pure deathmatch; every map has primary/secondary objectives (escort, hack, defend, destroy).
  • Persistent Character: XP unlocks abilities, weapons, cosmetics across both factions.
  • Blend System: Seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op; campaign = multiplayer with bots.

Reception & Legacy

  • Mixed at launch: praised for movement/art, criticized for AI, lag, thin content.
  • Cult following; free on Steam (2017); community mods/servers keep it playable.
  • Influenced Titanfall, Overwatch, Dirty Bomb (same dev).

Unique for its time—parkour + objectives + class synergy.
