How to Clean Game Cartridges and Discs: Methods by Media Type

Cleaning methods depend entirely on the media format. Using the wrong technique can cause permanent damage.

Cartridge Contacts (NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, DS, etc.)

  1. Use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab or lint-free cloth.
  2. Gently scrub the gold edge connectors on the cartridge.
  3. Let dry completely (1–2 minutes) before inserting.

Optical Discs (PS1, PS2, GameCube, Wii, Xbox, DVD, Blu-ray)

  1. Use a microfiber cloth (like for glasses).
  2. Wipe radially—from the center hole straight out to the edge. Never wipe in circles.
  3. For stubborn grime, lightly dampen the cloth with water or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Dry immediately with the dry side.

Digital Game Files (PC / Console Storage)

  • Verify Integrity: Steam (Properties → Local Files → Verify), Xbox/PlayStation (Manage Game → Verify/Repair).
  • Delete Corrupt Saves: Remove problematic save files from system storage.
  • Reinstall: Last resort—delete and re-download.

Malware / Virus Concerns

Run a full system scan with a reputable antivirus (Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, etc.). This is unrelated to physical media cleaning.

Always identify the media type first. Cartridge cleaner on a disc will scratch it; disc cleaner on cartridge pins leaves residue.
