Playing Game Boy Games on Game Boy Advance

Original Game Boy (DMG) and Game Boy Color (GBC) cartridges **do not fit** in a Game Boy Advance slot. The cartridge shape, pinout, and voltage are different.

How to Play GB/GBC Games on GBA Hardware

  • Game Boy Color cartridges: GBA plays **GBC games natively** (backward compatible). Many GB classics got GBC re-releases (e.g., Link's Awakening DX, Pokémon Yellow/Crystal, Metroid II — wait, Metroid II is GB only; Wario Land II has GBC version). Check for "Game Boy Color" on the label.
  • GBA ports of GB games: Several GB titles were remade/ported to GBA with enhancements: Super Mario Advance series (SMB2, SMB3, World, Yoshi's Island), Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls, Metroid: Zero Mission (remake of Metroid I).
  • Emulation (Homebrew): Flashcarts (EZ-Flash Omega, EverDrive GBA) + **Goomba Color** emulator run GB/GBC ROMs on GBA hardware. Requires flashcart + microSD + legally owned ROMs.

Direct cartridge insertion: **impossible**. But the GBA library includes many enhanced versions of GB classics, and flashcart emulation fills the rest.
